1. Current Funding Opportunities

a.    HSF Research Scholarships

The Heart and Stroke Foundation 's Research Scholarship is a salary award intended for accredited health professionals with a Master's or PhD degree pursuing research. The goal of the program is to attract and foster cardio-cerebrovascular investigators from a variety of health disciplines.

b.    HSF Grants-in-Aid, Career Investigator Awards, and New Investigator Awards/Distinguished Clinician Scientist Award

Application deadline for the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Grant-in-Aid, Career Investigator and New Investigator/Distinguished Clinician Scientist Award competitions is September 1, 2009.

The prestigious Distinguished Clinician Scientist Award recognizes the highest rated clinician in the New Investigator competition and is supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health.

c.    Partnerships for Health System Improvement (PHSI)

The Partnerships for Health System Improvement (PHSI) initiative is a premier funding opportunity for
health services and policy research. The goal of the program is to support collaborative, policy-relevant research to strengthen Canada's health care system.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) is pleased to be a partner in the PHSI program and is specifically interested
in supporting research in obesity, stroke, or resuscitation.

Registration deadline to obtain competition partner support from HSFC: September 15, 2009.
Full application deadline: November 2, 2009.

d.    IGH Travel Awards for Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows

The CIHR Institute of Gender and Health (IGH)’s Travel Award program continues for 2009-2010. The program offers financial support for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to present at conferences their own research that is relevant to the institute’s mandate.

e.    HSF Doctoral Research Awards and Research Fellowships

The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Doctoral Research Awards and Research Fellowships provide salary support for junior researchers working towards a PhD or undertaking post-doctoral research training, respectively.

Application deadline: October 30, 2009.

f.    Focus on Stroke 9

The goal of the Focus on Stroke program is to build capacity in the later themes of stroke research (i.e., clinical, health services/policy, and/or population health research) and support research training of health professionals (e.g. nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, speech therapists).

The ninth round of the initiative is funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the CIHR Institute of Aging and Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health, and the Canadian Stroke Network.

Application deadlines:
September 1, 2009 for Research Scholarships
October 30, 2009 for Doctoral Research Awards and Research Fellowships.

g.    Jump Start Resuscitation

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, in partnership with the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health, is offering Master’s Studentships, Doctoral Research Awards, Research Fellowships, and Research Scholarships through the Jump Start Resuscitation initiative.

This new personnel award program aims to build capacity for resuscitation research in Canada and to support the next generation of researchers who will contribute to advancing knowledge and improving the quality of patient care and outcomes in this important area.

Application deadline: November 6, 2009.

2. Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, Edmonton, October 24-28, 2009

The Congress showcases Canada's best research and promotes learning through scientific sessions, interactive workshops, late-breaking and featured clinical trials, and lively debates. The largest gathering of cardiovascular and allied health professionals in Canada, the event is an excellent opportunity to network, discuss the latest findings, and connect with your colleagues from across the country.

3. HSF Webinar: Population Health and Health Services Grants. Tips for Successful Applications.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation is hosting a webinar on preparing high quality population health and health services grant applications. Featured in the webinar are tips from Dr. Marco Di Buono, Director of Research at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario; Dr. Sonia Anand, Professor of Medicine at McMaster University; and Dr. Brenda Brouwer, Associate Dean, School of Graduate Studies and Research at Queen’s University.
