1. Current Funding Opportunities

a.    New Guidelines and Application Forms - Grant-in-Aid and Personnel Awards

The Guidelines and Application Forms for the 2009/10 funding year (fall 2008 submission) for the Grant-in-Aid and Personnel Awards programs are now available. Please note that there have been changes with this year's guidelines and application forms, including the addition of two new award categories: Research Scholarship and Distinguished Clinician Scientist. Please review the "summary of changes" for details.

The submission deadline for the Grant-in-Aid, New Investigator, and Career Investigator funding opportunities is August 29, 2008. The submission deadline for the Junior Personnel Awards (including the new Research Scholarship) is November 1, 2008.

b.    Operating Grant: Intervention Research (Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention) Request for Applications

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) is pleased to be working with the CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes to support population-based intervention research. The goal of this strategic initiative is to support the prompt initiation of intervention and evaluation research on rapidly unfolding programs, events, and/or policy initiatives/changes that have a potential impact on healthy living and/or chronic disease prevention.

c.    Vascular Cognitive Impairment Grants – Request for Proposals

HSFC and the Canadian Stroke Network (http://www.canadianstrokenetwork.ca) are pleased to announce the launch of the Request for Proposals in Vascular Cognitive Impairment. The goal of this initiative is to support research that addresses the role of vascular disease and stroke in cognitive impairment.

Registration deadline: September 26, 2008.
Full proposal deadline: November 14, 2008.

2. Upcoming Competition

a.    Focus on Stroke VIII

This is a pre-announcement for Focus on Stroke VIII, a partnership of HSFC, CIHR and the Canadian Stroke Network to support personnel awards in stroke research. This competition will be launched once again this year and will focus on later pillar research and building capacity for research by health professionals. Stay tuned! a. The Canadian Obesity Network/Laval University 3rd Annual Obesity Summer Boot Camp, Québec, July 27-August 4, 2008

The HSF is pleased to be a sponsor of the 2008 Obesity Summer Boot Camp. Led by the Canadian Obesity Network, the Boot Camp is an interdisciplinary training and networking program in picturesque Québec. The 9-day program features insightful sessions on key scientific and psycho-social issues in the prevention and treatment of obesity and its complications.

a. June is Stroke Awareness Month!

Every year, 50,000 Canadians suffer from a stroke – that’s one stroke every 10 minutes! Yet the latest report on stroke by HSF tells us that only 5 out of 10 Canadians treat stroke as a medical emergency.
