The award has two phases—a Research Fellowship phase (Phase 1; maximum 6 years) and a subsequent Research New Investigator phase (Phase 2; maximum 5 years).

Phase 1 is a Post-doctoral Fellowship award for a period of a maximum of six years. Applicants are reviewed in the National Research Fellowship peer review process for consideration on entry. Continued funding in years 4-6 of the award is conditional upon submission of a detailed progress report to the Provincial Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and approval by the HSFO Research Committee. Research Fellows are provided with a small amount of additional funds in years 4-6 for operating/equipment expenses. A Research Fellow may not hold a faculty position during phase 1.
