Supplementary Guidelines 2011-2012
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan (HSFS)
encourages applications for grants-in-aid from across the province and
in all four pillars of health research for projects in basic
biomedical, clinical, health services and health systems, and
population health research.
Grant-in-aid applicants at the University of
Saskatchewan and University of Regina are required to use the established
internal health research review process prior to submitting their applications
to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
An individual investigator can be the principal investigator on only one
grant funded by HSFS.
However, an investigator may appear as a collaborating investigator or
co-applicant on more than one grant.
All collaborators named in the application must provide a letter that
indicates their willingness to assist, including the specifics of their
collaboration.
Grants may be awarded for 1, 2 or 3
years of support. Budgets should be submitted for all years for which
support is requested. The funding levels awarded each year for a grant
approved for 2 or 3 years may be adjusted annually according to the
availability of funds.
The average funding award for a
single grant in the last granting cycle was $50,000. Funding awards are linked
to the ratings and to the availability of funds in any given year. Applicants
should consider these amounts when preparing the proposed budget for a grant
application.
Progress
Reports:
HSFS requires a progress report submitted each year by
March 1st.
Only progress reports submitted on the approved form
will be accepted. (Click on Progress Report at the top of this page for the
template of this report in PDF format).
Final
Reports: A final report must be submitted no later than three months after the completion of the project. Only final reports submitted on the approved form will be accepted. (Click on the Final Report at the top of this page for the template.)
Extensions: A) Any
unexpended balance of funds at the end of the funding year may be transferred
to the following year if they do not exceed 10% of the annual award amount. The
Foundation must be notified in writing with supporting rationale and financial
documentation. B) After the final year of the grant, any funds remaining will
be carried forward for a maximum of three months. This grace period is allowed
to ensure that all invoices pertaining to the award are submitted before the
account is closed. The Foundation will not be responsible for invoices
submitted after the account's closure date. C) After the final year of the
grant, all unexpended funds must be returned to the Heart and Stroke Foundation
of Saskatchewan at the end of three months.
Project
Interruption: The Foundation must be immediately advised of the interruption
of a project which has received a grant.
Travel: HSFS
permits up to $2,500 from an approved grant to be used for travel in any given funding
year. The use of travel funds in excess of $2500 is not permitted without prior
approval of HSFS. Prior approval of the Foundation must be obtained before
travel takes place and before traveling expenses are charged to the award. The
purpose and estimated cost of such travel must be given. Expenses must be documented.
Travel funds may be used to assist trainees, fellows and technicians associated
with the grant to attend scientific meetings as required, provided the approved
travel funds have not been exceeded.
Equipment: The
maximum amount that may be requested for equipment within a grant-in-aid
application is $6,500. This amount may only be requested in the first year of a
grant. Prior approval of the Foundation must be obtained before equipment is
purchased and before equipment expenses are charged to the award. The Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan does not pay for maintenance of equipment.
Indirect Costs: The Foundation supports only the direct costs of research. No
funding is to be used indirect cost of research (e.g. library, heat and light,
office furniture, overhead, administrative charges and fees, rental or lease
charges, basic telephone services, etc. - list not exhaustive).
