  • 2011/2012 Supplementary Guidelines

In addition to the guidelines of the National Foundation, the following guidelines apply to Grants-in-Aid submitted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia:

    1. An individual investigator can be the principal investigator on only one grant funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick. However, an investigator may appear as a collaborating investigator or co-applicant on more than one grant.

    2. For multi-provincial grants-in-aid, at least one investigator or co-applicant must be a resident of Nova Scotia. For all other grants-in-aid, the principal investigator must be a resident of Nova Scotia. Should a grant-in-aid recipient relocate outside of Nova Scotia, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia must be notified immediately. Continued funding is at the discretion of the Foundation.

    3. The Foundation’s policy provides for a maximum level of funding of $50,000 per year for each grant. Applicants should be aware that grants, even highly rated ones, will not receive funds in excess of this amount. Grant-in-aid proposals and budgets should be drafted with the Foundation's maximal level of funding in mind.

    4. Grants may be awarded for one, two, or three years of support. Budgets should be submitted for all years for which support is requested. The funding levels awarded each year for a grant approved for two or three years may be adjusted annually in response to the availability of funds.

    5. Research assistant and student salaries can be paid from grant funds and, where possible should be identified by name in the application.

    6. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia permits up to $2,000 from an approved grant to be used for travel in any given funding year for the purpose of presenting research results. Permission to use funds for travel must be obtained from the Foundation in advance of travel.

    7. Indirect Costs of Research: The HSFNS supports only the direct costs of research. HSFNS funding may not be used for indirect costs of research. Excluded costs are heating, lighting, office furniture, rental or lease charges, basic telephone service, and administrative charges or services (list not exhaustive).

    8. The Foundation requires a progress report be submitted each year by February 1st for review by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funding for the second and third year of grant applications will be dependent upon a successful review and recommendation from the Scientific Advisory Committee.

    9. A final report must be submitted to the Foundation by February 1st of the year following completion of the current grant. The final report should be no more than five pages in length and include pertinent references and reprints of articles related to the work supported by the Foundation.
