  1. Heart and Stroke Research Fund - Announcement of Competition Results

    Through the Heart and Stroke Foundation Research Fund, the Foundation launched a number of partnership initiatives with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and other partners over the past year. Results of the following competitions have recently been announced. Congratulations to the successful applicants!

    1. Gene-Environment Interactions

      Three proposals will be funded through the Gene Environment Interactions initiative (a partnership of the HSF and the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health). Congratulations to the following successful applicants and their research teams!

      • HAMET, Pavel (CHUM), "Cardiogene: a consortium to explore the gene-environment paradigm of major cardiovascular disorders in human and animal models".
      • LIU, Peter (University of Toronto) "An integrated Canadian strategy to address heart failure - Gene-environment interactions of host stress response repertoire".
      • PARE, Peter (University of British Columbia) "Inflammatory gene haplotypes and susceptibility to cardiac, vascular and pulmonary disease".

    2. Chronic Disease - New Emerging Teams

      In partnership with the CIHR's Institutes of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes and Circulatory and Respiratory Health, The Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Diabetes Association, a New Emerging Teams in Chronic Disease initiative was launched in fall 2001. The program was designed to support the creation or development of new competitive research teams in the chronic disease area. We are pleased to report that 6 projects will receive support.

      • JOHNSON, Jeffrey A. (University of Alberta), "Establishment of the alliance for Canadian health outcomes research in diabetes (ACHORD) group"
      • LEBEL, Marcel (Université Laval), "Cardiovascular health in chronic renal failure"
      • NICHOL, Graham (University of Ottawa),"Cardiovascular outcomes related to economics (CORE) group"
      • PARFREY, Patrick S. (Memorial University of Newfoundland) "Canadian collaborative group for the prevention of illness in kidney disease. The Canadian Prevention of Renal and Cardiovascular Endpoints Trial (CANPREVENT)"
      • ROCHON, Paula A. (Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences-Toronto) "Pharmacological management of chronic disease in older adults"
      • SCHOLEY, James W. (University of Toronto), "Gender / genes and glomerular-based diseases research group"

    3. Training Program Grants

      A total of 133 Training Program Grants were reviewed recently. The results of this competition are expected to be announced in mid March. Stay tuned!

    4. Focus on Stroke Training Initiative

      In partnership with the ICRH, the Canadian Stroke Network, the CIHR Rx&D Program along with AstraZeneca Canada, the HSF will be supporting a number of training awards in the area of stroke through this special joint initiative. Results will be available in mid-March.

  2. Nursing Research Fellowships Application Deadline - March 15, 2002

    This is a reminder that applications for Nursing Research Fellowship awards must be received by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada by 4:00 p.m. on March 15, 2002. For more information as well as application forms and program guidelines, please visit our Web site:

  4. SRC Executive Wants to Hear from You!

    The annual meeting of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's Scientific Review Committee Executive is being held on March 13, 2002. All aspects of the Foundation's research programs, including peer review, partnerships, research administration processes, and application forms/guidelines will be discussed.

    This is your opportunity to forward any comments/concerns/feedback or recommendations for the fall 2001 competitions. Please email your feedback to jgee@hsf.ca and this will be forwarded to the SRC Executive for discussion.

  6. Call for Abstracts - Canadian Cardiovascular Congress 2002

    The third Canadian Cardiovascular Congress 2002 co-sponsored by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada will be held in Edmonton, Alberta October 26-30, 2002. A call for abstracts has been launched and an online submission process is in place. The deadline for submitting abstracts is Friday, April 12, 2002.   8. Grant-in-aid Results (September 2001 Competition)

    The results of the September 2001 Heart and Stroke grant-in-aid competition will be available through the provincial Heart and Stroke Foundation offices. Posting dates vary depending on the province.

    Results from the HSFO have now been posted.

  10. National Personnel Support Program Competition Results 2002/2003

    The results of the new investigator, research fellowship, doctoral research award and visiting scientist competitions will be posted on the HSFC research website at www.hsf.ca/research towards the end of March 2002.
