  5. Update on HSF Research Fund Initiatives

The Heart and Stroke Foundation's Research Policy and Planning Advisory Committee (RPPAC) held their first meeting of the New Year on January 18-19, 2002. This meeting was a continuation of their planning activities - exploring directions for the HSF Research Fund and the Heart and Stroke Foundation research enterprise.

The following is an update on some of the initiatives underway through the HSF Research Fund:

    ***Gene-Environment Interactions***
Peer review of applications submitted to the Gene-Environment Interactions Program took place on January 21. A total of 11 applications were reviewed. Results will be announced in the next several weeks. For more information on this program, visit:

***New Emerging Teams in Chronic Disease***

Seven applications will be reviewed under this program February 6-7, 2002. Results of this competition will be announced in March.

    ***New Frontiers Program***
Leaders from the 15 groups that received support from the HSF and ICRH to conduct consensus conferences, think tanks, and other planning initiatives will convene on February 5-6 to present and discuss the outcomes of their initiatives. A report from this program will available in March. A list of these initiatives and the investigators can be found at:

  6. HSFO Vision 20/20 survey - Reminder

As part of its Vision 20/20 planning process, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario recently issued a survey to gather opinions on the issues confronting the CVD/stroke research community. The results will help to direct the HSFO's research funding priorities.

The deadline for completing this survey has been extended to January 25, 2002. If you have not yet had a chance to complete the survey, please visit: http://www.williamsresearch.com/hsfo_survey/HSFO_Survey.htm

While we would appreciate your input on all issues raised by the survey, we realize you may be too busy to answer all of the questions. We, therefore, invite you to focus on the following three priority sections:
    I. Demographic Information
    IV. Research Capacity
XI. Allocation of Additional HSFO Research Resources

If you experience any technical difficulties, please contact Jean Liao at WilliamsResearch: HSFO_survey@williamsresearch.com 416-920-6653 or 1-877-868-5444 (toll-free)
